The Honourable James Henry Muirhead AC
James Muirhead served as Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory from 1974 to 1985, Acting Justice from 1987 to 1988 and Acting Chief Justice in 1985.
Justice Muirhead graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Laws degree.
Justice Muirhead served in the Australian Imperial Forces from 1943 to 1946 and was admitted to the Bar in 1950. He was a Barrister and Solicitor in South Australia until 1969 and was appointed as a Queen's Counsel in 1967.
Justice Muirhead was appointed as a Judge of the District Court of South Australia in 1970 and Acting Justice of the Supreme Court of Papua New Guinea in 1972. He was also Acting Director of the Australian Institute of Criminology in Canberra from 1973 to 1974.
Justice Muirhead served as a Justice of the Federal Court of Australia from 1977 to 1986 and was the Royal Commissioner into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody from 1987 to 1989.
Justice Muirhead was appointed as Administrator of the Northern Territory, a position he held until 1992 and was made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1991.
James Muirhead Chambers in Darwin now bears his name.
